NEWS CULLED FROM PETERBOROUGH'S SOCIAL MEDIA
I'm going to try and do an occasional newsletter saying what people are talking about in Peterborough, culled from local blogs and Twitter channels etc. There was at least one bad word in one of the tweets below.

CRESSET CLOSES
The local Cresset Theatre announced it was closing yesterday. Though the Cresset was mainly only a venue for stand ups and bands, it obviously knocks a bit of a hole in the city's cultural landscape. There has been a lot of disappointment about this being another step back for the city.
@chris_harman: Just heard the Cresset is closing. Terrible news for Peterborough, seen some great comedians and bands there.
@boudledidge there'll be nothing left here soon...

MIGRANT SQUATTER EVICTIONS
This story is doing the rounds:
Peterborough Today: "MIGRANTS have been forced out of their shanty town in woodland near the River Nene by Peterborough City Council. Officials were delighted that the group of six settlers met the deadline of noon yesterday which the council had given them to vacate land at Potters Way, off Fengate, in Peterborough. However, the defiant group have insisted they will maintain their homeless lifestyle in Peterborough, despite an ongoing investigation into the legality of their stay by the UK Border Agency. The squalid camp was split into two groups - one lived in by three Poles and one 100 metres away, inhabitated by Latvian Vitali Zukov and Lithuanians Nikolai Putkov and Virgilijus Sleinius."

CITIZEN POWER IN PETERBOROUGH REPORT
Some good discussion of this on Twitter. Local blogger Blogging in a Boggy Place is generally positive but injects a note of caution:
"RSA is an arts organisation that believes the arts have a central role to play in creating a vibrant and productive city culture, Peterborough has been chosen for the project because of its lack of identity and potential for change. However it does smack of a project that will appeal to the usual suspects within the local establishment rather than a grass roots movement. The way that it has been presented in the scoping report uses language likely to turn off 95% of the local population and the cool and trendy way that they are using social networking sites shows that they do not understand the psychology of the city. Peterborough is a homesteader city where the majority of people just want steady jobs to support them and their families. If you are looking for fertile ground for new ideas then you need a pioneering young city like Cambridge."
Tweets:
@boudledidge: @citpower have lived here for 3yrs but don't feel any attachment to the city or sense of community; feel it has little to offer for me
@badgergravling @citpower I'd suggest including mobile and general social network monitoring - plenty of free tools available to at least catch some of it
@boudledidge: @citpower i found it really interesting - this sort of stuff is vital for Pboro i think
@badgergravling @citpower Glad to see you've avoided asking any average white 25+ males about their views. I guess I'll keep them to myself then...

PETERBOROUGH ADVICE INTEGRATION PROJECT
Started using Twitter last week. They're an alliance of Compass Step One, Peterborough CVS, Peterborough CAB and DIAL Peterborough. On their website they state:
The Advice Integration Project Partnership will identify how the delivery of legal advice and information in Peterborough can be improved. The initial work of the project will include 4 key elements:

  • A needs analysis – an initial assessment of the legal needs of people living in Peterborough
  • A map of current suppliers – an identification and survey of current providers of information and advice showing what services they offer and how and where they are provided.
  • A gap analysis – identifying and prioritising the gaps in provision.
  • A referral protocol – a web-based protocol and form to standardise and improve current referral practices between providers.

Thanks David. It's great to have your input. Amplification is hopefully exactly what we can do here...
