Citizen Aid - should citizens be trained in first aid and how to intervene in anti-social behaviour?

This is a blog that appeared recently on the NESTA website following the publication of a report from NESTA and the RSA. Wording attributed to NESTA's Philip Colligan. "Last week Nesta and the RSA published a report by Ben Rogers calling for citizens to be trained in how to stop fights and intervene in anti-social behaviour. As you'd…See More

"Good point, I love it when social media is reciprocal - if people value what you have to say they'll repeat it, but that needs to be a two way street - you still show what is important to you and your community by repeating…"

"That list is pretty much spot on Georgina but I'd also add somewhere in there to engage with other users, rather than just broadcast your message. The key part of Social Media is "social" - no-one wants to follow/subscribe to an…"

Top tips from the workshop...

I've added to one of the slides from the workshop to give list of top tips. Let's keep those social media juices flowing! 1.Start by listening (monitoring and seeing how others communicate)2.Start small (don’t feel need to use every platform straight away)3.Understand your values (and use social media get these across)4.Create value for citizens (what would you find interesting/want to know)5.Facilitate sharing (reciprocate with sharing others info or event where there is a connection)6.Keep it…See More

Street Pastor Stories exhibition at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery

August 24, 2012 at 6pm to September 9, 2012 at 4pm
Come along to Peterborough City Art Gallery (check out the Michael Craig-Martin show on your way through) and in the gallery to the back is a lovely exhibtion of the comic strips created by Grennan and Sperandio and the Peterborough Street Pastors. Through a residency as part of Arts and Social Change, these comic strips tell the invisible stories of the street pastors, describing the experiences of helping and being helped. Previously printed in the Evening Telegraph, these prints will adorn…See More

Profile Information

Where are you from?
I live in London but visit Peterborough alot
Website
https://www.thersa.org/projects/citizen-power
What is your own vision for Peterborough?
Because I work on the Citizen Power programme and read all your profiles - it would be that everyone on this website felt that their own vision for Peterborough was starting to become true by the time Citizen Power is through in summer 2012
One thing you'd like to change about the place?
I'd encourage a more of a risk taking culture. Try it and see.
What areas of the Citizen Power project are you most interested in?
All of them, but particularly arts and social change.
What's your favourite place to eat in Peterborough?
Just heard Patisserie Valerie is in town...
Favourite place to go?
The Green Backyard is an oasis in the city, Sacrewell Farm do a mean tractor ride and in the city, I like the willow trees that hang over the River Nene, looks so peaceful.
If a Martian came to Peterborough, what would you show him/her/it to explain what the place was about?
The Cathedral is amazing when you first see it, it has beautiful old brick work and an imposing facade.
Tell us some more about yourself
I am the Programme Manager for Citizen Power at the RSA. I work alongside Sam, Jocelyn, Susy, Jamie, Emma, Ben, Rebecca and Louise and will all our partners in Peterborough, like Graeme Clark who works at the council.

Kerbside haikus for Peterborough?

I was at an interesting social media roundtably thing on Tuesday all about whether connecting neighbours can make areas better places to live. In the context of this, we discussed how sometimes social media, i.e. leaving posts or comments on websites, blogging and tweeting can be a daunting thing to do, particularly if you hold a public office and you've got a media team who at arms length from the action 'do that' or if you are in an organisation with a strict communications policy when…

Peterborough in print

Hope you'll indulge me here, a bit of summer (where's that sun gone?!) fun but with a serious side.

I've been stocking up on some summer reading and recently finished Dissolution by CJ Sansom (which i would totally recommend by the way, gripping murderous thriller set in the 15th century) - anyway I was really struck because Peterborough is mentioned early on and it got me thinking about a visit last year to the Musee des artes du Cognac - in Cognac, France - where there was…
