That is a genuine quote from the book, (honest)
ANYWAY! This month we will be having two support acts: The first being the Captain of the Rant!! here are some quotes about him: ...“Captain of the Rant is in your face social commentary, as well as funny and at times poignant” - Pete The Temp

“Combines a barbed wire wit with a ferocious delivery that has made him one of the most distinctive voices out there today” - Speechmotion

“"In a scene perhaps more open than most to saturation by pretension, Captain of the Rant is consistently a breath of fresh air. His poetry takes in the political without being preachy and the profoundly personal without being inaccessible. There is no unnecessary window-dressing with his poetry; just good, honest chat about shit that matters" – The Ruby Kid

“When he pulled out the estate agent poem the place went nuts!” - David J

“Fantastic... one of the best new performance poets I have ever seen” - Attila The Stockbroker

'HE IS A STELLA FELLA AND I LOVE HIM QUITE ALOT'! Keely Mills -relative unknown

The other is 'Hannah Carousel' originally from the wilds of the fens, she is now ripping apart the poetry scene in Bristol, she has performed for us before with a style that disarmed the inimitable 'Martin Newell' who was headlining. Hannah's style is abundant in beauty, rudeness and metaphors to knock your socks off!!

The headliner is PETE THE TEMP! What a beauty this man is... here are some more details to refresh yourselves: Hammer and Tongue UK Slam Champion 08/09
Pete The Temp is, a singer-songwriter, a compere, a poet, a lover and a damn fine administrator.
He is based in Oxford but has been spotted in London, Brighton, Reading, Cambridge and Cheltenham and Coventry. He was the Oxjam Slam Champion (2007), finalist in the Hammer and Tongue Slam Final (2008) and went on to become the Hammer and Tongue UK Slam Champion the following year. He has performed at festivals such as Wychwood, Oxford Literary Festival, Brighton Festival and Brixton Green Fair.

Recent work includes participating in a spoken word tour in collaboration with People and Planet, a youth arts festival and the filming of performace poetry videos. He also teaches performance poetry in workshops.

He has shared a stage with some of the biggest names in stand up poetry including John Hegley, Byron Vincent, Mark Gwynn Jones, Elvis McGonnagal and Tim Claire.

JUST A GENTLE REMINDER IT IS KEELY'S BURFDAY SO ALL CAKES ARE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED....

Doors open: 7:30pm and acts start at 8ish
Place: The Brewery Tap VIP room
price:£4
Date: 2nd of March

Beatroots

Club Dissident

24b Lincoln Road, PE1 2RL (upstairs)

Peterborough, United Kingdom

Join us ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT for live music, workshops, art, poetry, crafts, local food, body painting, BIG drawing, graffiti and much more to raise funds and celebrate the second birthday of the Green Backyard - YOUR urban green space!

All ages welcome before 8pm, 18+ after
FREE/Donation before 7pm, £3 after

...The One Pound Workshops 1pm - 4pm

► Learn to MC with MC Sniper
► Mix with world record breaking DJ Urb
► Beat box with Locality soundsmith Skillz
► Weave stars and other shapes with willow from the Green Backyard
► Learn to make homemade beauty products with natural ingredients
► Make models from clay and gathered natural items
► Take part in the Knit In - knit a square for our GBY patchwork blanket
► Perfect your poi and juggling skills
► Get some cycle maintenance tips and check your bike know-how
+ Plus more on the day!

Live Music:

►4.00pm ~ Daniel Burke - Acoustic set from the Dead Rabbits guitarist
►4.45pm ~ Niksays - Acoustic punk rock
►5.30pm ~ Cold Club Trio - Gypsy swing and all that jazz
►6.15pm ~ Nick Thompson and friends - Improv prog rock
►7.00pm ~ Isiah - Local folk rock heroes
►8.00pm ~ Oscar De Winter - An accordion, bardic tones and a raised eyebrow
►8.45pm ~ Moony - Soulful Opaque frontman
►9.30pm ~ Dead Poets (with Skillz) - Poets who know it with beat box backing
►10.15pm ~ Xidus Pain - Conscious local hip hop
►11.00pm ~ Dr Robeatnik - Solo loop-pedal powered tunes from Sheffield
►11.45pm ~ PolyChaos - Dubby bassy funky fun from Leicester

Live DJ's:

► 12.15am ~ DJ Urb - A world record breaker, dancing shoes are mandatory!
► 1.15am ~ Day Glow Joe and Benny T - World beats and filthy rhythms
► 2.45am ~ Lukus - Too funky for words
► 3.45am ~ Sysex - Techno techno techno

The Green Backyard is a community garden in central Peterborough created 2 years ago when a group of volunteers took over an area of disused land and began transforming it into a beautiful and productive green space. We will be there from 7:30, performances will start at 8pm.

The mic is open to anyone that wants to come and perform a piece. Pieces can be monologues / dialogues / sketches or short excerpts from plays. Anyone that wants to perform can come along on the night either with a piece prepared or feel free to dip into the selection of monolgue and sketch books that will be on hand to perhaps do something off the cuff. If you do wish to perform please arrive between 7:30 and 8pm to enable us to put the set list together. A rough guide for timing of performances is 10 minutes - in order to give the maximum number of people a chance to perform.

The Brewery Tap are letting us use their function room for free, and if the night is a success we can turn it into a regular event. But, we can only do this if we get really good numbers for the first event. So if you want to see things like this happening more often, then please come and support us!

For more information please contact us on dramaontap@hotmail.com

2 Images | View Slideshow | Download Selected | Download All

EHSF Poster.jpg
(496KB)

stamford exb 2011 a.jpg
(795KB)

How do you solve a problem like Peterborough? at Devoted and Disgruntled tag:citizenpower.co.uk,2011-01-30:5135975:BlogPost:1930 2011-01-30T21:01:58.000Z keely Mills https://citizenpower.co.uk/profile/keelyMills
I have had the opportunity over this weekend to go to Improbable's 'Devoted and Disgruntled event in London and what an experience!

We were in an open space forum, where the participants could decide on the topics that could be discussed, this mean't a real sense of freedom as well as discussing subjects that were very passionate to the individuals. There were not many rules only that if you were not participating in a discussion then use the 'law of the two feet' and move on. I dipped in and out of topics like 'I have a big idea but I don't feel big enough' and 'How can theatre help and support the closure of local libraries'. From this I met artists from all mediums, organisations and backgrounds and gained valauable knowledge and contacts that I can hopefully bring back to Peterborough.

So on a whim I got up and pitched my topic to the 320 people in the room, with my typcial compere aplomp, approached the microphone and made some curt joke about it being like a self help group. Now I had their attention and the title came to my lips, 'How do I solve a problem like Peterborough'? the laughter was rapturous and there was clapping too and people were congratulating me as I left the floor... so ok I had to go through with it now. I could see I was slowly becoming that girl from Peterborough, which hopefully mean't I would have more participants on my session. The moment of doom arrived, I prepared my paperwork and waited for the people to come, so to speak and they did! I asked how do you inspire local artists? How do you create work without a venue? etc etc... ideas came thick and thicker from all people in the group and as I wrote my notes and discussed it further. I found that in fact we were already on the right track to solving our own problems now with the help of RSA and all the artists, groups and organisations that are already working on this cause.

Then the one inspiring moment came, I described about the 'Take me to' projects, the creative gatherings, the different art collectives, the poetry nights, the work of Eastern Angles, the work of individuals who give up their time, space and money to art already. Then she said... lovely Sally from the National Ballet... 'it sounds to me like you can no longer say your place of no culture or for that matter noone else can either'. Wow, there it was it is already happening, we are already doing it.

So I began to write my report of the session for the organisers and the other participants who could not make it to my session and this was my final thought and now my new motto: 'be proud of your from in the here and now and you may not be in the prettiest city but its yours'.
